the main image shows a low angle shot of Sterling standing in a confident stance which connotes how he is looking down upon us, with a large pair of black wings which connotes that he is an angel. He looks serious and directly addresses the audience this has connotations to strength and power

The layout and design of the magazine cover communicate meaning they show this by putting all the cover lines surrounding Sterlings main body this connotes how Sterling is important, his head is even covering some of the text, he also has a smug look on his face plus he has a slight head tilt which connotes to power and strength. People normally associate black with evil and Sterling has black cloths and black wings which connote a angel which represents the cover line and the bible, but he is represented as someone who saved football form itself almost like a hero with opposes the stereotype that all black is evil. All these shows how the GQ cover communicates meaning through layout and design

cover line analysis: media language

Analyse the cover for how media language has been used to create different meanings you could mention:
  • Main image
  • Anchorage
  • cover lines
  • Layout

Media language has been used in many different ways to create different meanings. Firstly, the main image uses a medium close up show of her in a red hijab looking at you with a slight smile and eye level angle showing her confidence and importance, this can connote direct address and that she is directly telling you she is a survivor, activist and legend. The colour red has connotations of courage. This links to Malala courage feat of surviving a bullet shot and actively trying to change the world for the good (activist)

secondly, the main cover line and anchorage says "The extraordinary life of Malala, It uses a white colour and a serif text font to make sure it stands out and contrasts with the red background celebrating her name which shows how important that information is. The cover lines show women's fashion, for example, the cover line "Vogues guide to summer beauty" suggests this magazine follows the stereotypical women's magazine. This contrasts Malala who isn't represented as very feminine additionally the masthead is over her forehead which anchors her as a vogue star in combination with her caption which is also in the same silver-gray colour further reinforcing this

Lastly, the layout is stereotypical because its follows the magazine cover conventions. For example, it uses the Z-layout which shows the artist wants you to focus on the words and information showing its important furthermore the red colour palette connotes passion and the danger she had to go through but on the other hand showing how courageous she was

representation

in the past, Muslims have been represented as terrorists or villains. They are rarely seen as anything else.

in terms of ethnicity the Vogue cover shows a more inclusive range of races

explain how both gender and ethnicity have been represented on this cover

gender is represented in anti stereotypical way, for example, the cover line "Survivor" shows an anti stereotypical female not the victim but the survivor/winner. This is not stereotypical because most women are normally seen as the victim in these situations. It links to "Malala" being the anchorage which represents she is powerful and the most important part bringing all this together, on the other hand in the image Malala has a very gentle and feminine look with her hand gestures and facial gestures. This is stereotypical because normally women are represented as being kind and on the more feminine side.

Gender is represented in a stereotypical way. For example, the cover lines all talking about beauty fashion and love. This is stereotypical because it supports the idea that women are more concerned about there looks and how others view them. It links to Vogue which usually go down the route of those stereotypes, although gender is also represented anti stereotypical. For example, one of the cover lines is talking about "fighting talk" which is a interview about boxing. This is anti stereotypical because boxing is usually seen as a male sport but its on a women's magazine. This links to Malala and the fact she isn't really being represented as a Female victim but more a Female legend

Ethnicity is also represented in a anti stereotypical way. For example in the main cover lines they are talking about black people and Malala. This is anti stereotypical because normally women are seen as white tall women and same with other people in the cover lines. This links to Vogue who are normally more exclusive with who there models are

    Malala 25 mark question

Similarities:
  • both have the Z-layout
  • both look feminine

Differences:
  • Different camera shots (Elle showing more skin)
  • Malalas cover lines challenge stereotypes but Elle dosen't
  • clothing (Elle has more "sexy" cloths showing femininity)

Overall between the two magazine covers, there are more differences between them two then similarities when it comes to the representation of gender.

The first difference is the different camera shots this is shown in the vogue cover by Malala showing less of her body and her skin this challenge's women stereotypes of showing of more skin is better which is different from Elle whom is showing most of her legs arms and face this is shown by her short sleeve shirt and trousers and hair blowing out her face this can connote that she is being represented a'lot more feminine that Malala, this matches the conventions typically seen in a women's magazine.

The second difference is the different cover lines being said in the cover, In the Vogue cover stereotypes are being challenged by the cover line "Fighting talk" which is a male fighting talk podcast a cover line like this is not very common on a women's magazine which shows Malala is being show and different from the rest of us. However, the Elle cover shows a very stereotypical route for the cover lines this is shown by cliche cover lines like "a smart women's guide to self-belief" and "fashions new minimal how to wear winters coolest trend" the stereotypical women's magazine will normally talk about fashion and how you are seen by others for this being on the Elle cover represents that Elle is being represented as a very stereotypical women who loves fashion and only cares about how she looks which is very common for a women's magazine

on the other hand, the first similarity is how they are both represented as very feminine some more than other. This is shown in the Vogue cover by Malala looking very gentle and calm with a flowing silk headdress, jewellery and makeup this can represent that even tho she dosen't have many of the main stereotypical women looks like showing skin and 'sexy' pose she is still trying to be show women like with how she is acting and looks. In a similar way, the Elle cover shows femininity this is show by the cloths she's wearing, pose she is standing in, hair, makeup, and jewellery same with Malala this will also represent femininity and the stereotypical beauty of women.

Overall, this shows there are more differences in the two covers in terms of representation of gender.
